My son Alex and I attended the 2007 Home Plate event last Saturday at Comerica Park.  SCORE Ministries and the Baseball Chapel for the Detroit Tigers hosted the event.

Program participants included all of the following: Detroit Tiger pitchers Mike Maroth, Todd Jones, Jason Grilli, Chad Durbin, and Nate Robertson, Tiger outfielder Marcus Thames, Tiger first baseman Sean Casey, Tiger broadcaster Rod Allen, and former Detroit Tigers Willie Horton and Frank Tanana.  These athletes represent a mix of veteran and young ballplayers united in a common purpose by their faith in Jesus Christ.

We also participated in an on-the-field baseball clinic sponsored by the Detroit Tigers. The clinic consisted of various players and coaches from the Tigers teaching about various aspects of baseball (hitting, pitching, fielding, etc.) at stations setup around the outfield.

After the clinic, we watched the game between the Tigers and the Twins.  Unfortunately, the Twins won.

From the Troy Police Department...

April 30, 2007

In response to a City of Troy City Council Proclamation declaring May 1st as “Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 Day,” the Troy Police Department is reminding all motorists that the speed limit in residential areas is 25 miles per hour.  Radar speed trailers will be set up on residential streets during the next several days reminding drivers of the 25-mile per hour speed limit, as well as providing a visual reading of their actual speeds.  Members of the Troy Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit will be conducting increased speed enforcement on motorcycles and semi-marked traffic safety units in area subdivisions in response to this effort, as well.

The Troy Police Department has purchased a limited number of “Keep Kids Alive Drive 25” signs that are available to homeowners associations for use in their subdivisions as an educational and preventative tool.  For more information on these signs, please contact Traffic Safety Unit Sergeant Dan Daniel at 248-524-3427.

Statistics have shown that a pedestrian struck by a moving vehicle traveling 30 miles per hour is three times more likely to sustain life threatening injuries than if struck by a vehicle traveling 25 miles per hour.  The goal of this effort is to achieve compliance with the 25 mile per hour speed limit in residential areas and thereby enhance the safety of all our residents, including our children.

Here's an excerpt...

T. Willard Fair, an ally of former Gov. Jeb Bush, is the new face of opposition to proposals like one championed by President Bush to allow undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship.  Fair, president of the Urban League of Greater Miami, is appearing in ads in The Washington Post and RollCall, a Capitol Hill newspaper, saying that "to black Americans, amnesty is an immoral seizure of our jobs.  Amnesty for illegal workers is not just a slap in the face to black Americans. It's an economic disaster''...
