State Rep. Marty Knollenberg today introduced legislation to create a statewide Do Not Call registration list for automated political phone calls, known as "robo-calls."
"I hear all the time from constituents that they are sick of these bothersome phone calls," said Knollenberg, R-Troy. "A phone call from an automated system is just as annoying and inconvenient as a phone call from a telemarketer."
House Bill 4467 creates a registry similar to the national "Do Not Call" registration in which residents of Michigan could sign to no longer receive the calls.
Knollenberg also co-sponsored HB 4239, which passed the full House on Tuesday. It demands greater disclosure on robo-calls, requiring people who are behind the calls to properly identify themselves at the beginning of the call.
"A robo-call is essentially a political advertisement," Knollenberg said. "A disclaimer containing full identification is required in a political ad of any other format. Isn't it common sense to require the same standards for an advertisement in any medium?"
