View Article  Should Nonresidents Be Allowed to Run for City Office?

A Troy citizen brought this Detroit News item to my attention...

Dump Troy nonresident elected official idea
Without question, the Troy City Council has issues managing business regulations. But a fledgling proposal to add a nonresident business person as an elected council member is ridiculous. The idea is being studied because some Troy officials say many businesses in the city are owned by people who don't live in the city, yet they deserve a chance to help shape public policy. If there's such a need, the local chamber of commerce should find business owners who also live in the city. Bringing in nonresidents is a bad idea.

I'm not sure who is suggesting this idea.  If you have more information, please send me an email at dave@lambert.net .

Also, I'm not sure why anyone would say "the Troy City Council has issues managing business regulations." Over the past six years, we have a proven record of providing regulatory relief for Troy businesses.

Here's what the web site says...

Two hundred years ago, British politician William Wilberforce and his band of loyal friends took on the most powerful forces of their day to end the slave trade. His mentor was John Newton, the slave-trader-turned-song-writer, who wrote the world’s most popular hymn, Amazing Grace. This year is the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. But the work of justice and mercy continues. 27 million men, women, and children are still enslaved around the globe. How sweet the sound of freedom. Join churches around the globe in singing Amazing Grace and in praying for the end of slavery once and for all.

Be sure to see the movie “Amazing Grace” when it premiers in theaters on February 23.
