From the City of Troy Community Affairs Department…

The new Troy affiliate of the nationwide non-profit organization “Christmas in Action” is seeking volunteers for this year’s Action Day, Saturday, April 28.  With a team of volunteers, Christmas in Action makes sure that low-income seniors and seniors with disabilities can remain safely in their homes by providing free home improvements.

Once a year Christmas in Action holds an Action Day on the last Saturday in April where volunteers gather throughout the nation to work towards completing home repairs.  Volunteers ages 12 and up are needed to join the effort.

“Civic groups, youth groups, schools and businesses are invited to help us restore dignity and quality of life to seniors in need,” Richard Gauthier, President of Christmas in Action of Troy, said.  “There are many seniors who cannot afford the basic necessities of life, so there is no way they can afford to make home improvements.  With free home repairs we ensure that these homes are safe for our seniors through a grass-roots, neighbor-helping-neighbor, community partnership approach. ”

Christmas in Action began in Midland, Texas in 1973.  The project acquired its name when one elderly beneficiary exclaimed, “Why, this is like Christmas.”  An Oakland County affiliate was launched in 1996 and Troy’s affiliate formed in late 2006.  There are many ways to help Christmas in Action of Troy.  Donations of materials and money are appreciated.  There are also many sponsorship opportunities available, as well as volunteer opportunities on April 28.
