From the City of Troy Community Affairs Department...

A growing number of oversized trash containers are being used throughout the City of Troy.  These oversized cans have wheels on them, which enable homeowners to easily move the container even when it is heavily loaded.  Homeowners may not realize how heavy the container is because they are wheeling, not carrying the trash to the curb.

Our City Ordinance states that trash containers cannot exceed a 35-gallon capacity and cannot weigh over 60 lbs. when full.  Because of the health and safety issues associated with repeatedly picking up oversized trash containers, the City of Troy does not empty these containers.  The size limitation helps to ensure that workers can lift the containers without fear of injury. When you figure that a trash handler empties between 800 and 1000 cans per day, one can start to understand the need for the rules.

There are several options for homeowners who have trash cans over the 35-gallon limit.  The first is to wheel your container to the curb, remove the bags, and set the bags by the curb for pick-up.  The second is to purchase a new container that does not exceed the 35-gallon limit.  The third option is to purchase a 90-gallon polycart from our waste hauler, Tringali Sanitation.  This 90-gallon cart is hydraulically lifted and emptied into the truck.  It does not have to be lifted by the workers.  If you are interested in the 90-gallon cart, please contact Tringali Sanitation at 248.585.9120.

The City appreciates your assistance in making the refuse collection program in Troy efficient, healthy, and safe for everyone.
