I received the following email today...
Dear Council Member ,
It was with great disappointment that I watched you as a council vote on January 22 2007 to change the wording of a goal and objective to read in such a way that one needs to conclude was at the least insensitive and at the most a hostility to the many minorities in this city . This was goal and objective was reworded to just words which have no meaning . The change seemed to have meant to hide their true meaning of "Christian Values" will supercede all other values. In the process of trying to hide the true intent, the goal became a nothing goal. Read it,what are the elements are you going to use to measure the outcome. "The fact that you insulted the numerous minorities in the city". Under those conditions you met your goal. As a council you did succeed in again insulting all the minorities of this city with your insensitivity. It was clear to me and as well as to others that the motion had a purpose which meant to imply that Christian Values supercede all the other ethnic values now present in this city. I must again remind this council that our founding fathers intended a country where all religions and beliefs could live in harmony and with equal rights . This country was founded by mostly Christians, but not only Christians since my ancestors were also founders, who had suffered greatly in Europe as a minority religion . One reason for the "FOUNDING FATHERS" greatness is that in this country they were now in the majority . They painfully made a country of majority rule and minority rights so never again should one suffer for not following the majority . They worked hard to allow all people to be free of government being only for the majority and hurting the minority. Please reconsider the goal you changed and how it looks to us who have no minority representing us on the council.
SINCERLY YOURS,
My response...
Dear _______________:
Here's the wording of the new objective: "Promote the heritage of our City and the shared principles of our Country, while also recognizing the national and ethnic ties of all our citizens." How do you find that wording insensitive?
