From the Troy PD...
In late November, investigators from the Troy Police Department identified a suspect believed involved in apartment basement storage locker break-ins and larcenies that were occurring in the Metro Detroit area. Troy investigators with assistance from the Southfield Police Department arrested the 46-year-old male suspect after he committed an apartment basement storage locker break-in in the City of Southfield on November 28, 2007. The suspect and that case were turned over to and prosecuted by the Southfield Police Department. Additional investigation indicated the suspect was selling items stolen during the course of those break-ins at area pawnshops. Investigators identified two of those pawnshops and garnered cooperation from management representatives at each. Investigators learned the suspect was selling the items, representing he was purchasing them from garage sales and flea markets. The pawnshops turned over approximately 131 items to Troy investigators that the suspect had pawned in an attempt to locate the owners. The items will be on display for members of the media to photograph at the Troy Police Department on Wednesday, January 17th, and Thursday, January 18th. Please contact Lieutenant Gerry Scherlinck to arrange for an appointment.
The suspect was not cooperative with investigators in terms of where he committed these break-ins, however investigators know they involve apartment complex basement storage lockers. Individuals who may have been victimized by such a crime may contact Detective Pete Pizzorni of the Troy Police Department at 248-680-7280. He will have a complete listing of items recovered, as well as photographs of those items for potential owners to inspect. The items themselves will be returned to the pawnshops in the near future. Perspective owners will be referred to the respective pawnshop to recover their properties. The Troy Police Department can not process these returns, as state law requires owners to pay the pawnshop fees. In this case, owners that might be able to identify their property and who are seeking to recover it, will be required to deal with the pawn shop directly and pay the fees.
Items identified as possibly stolen include: a train set, a saxophone, a camera, some sports memorabilia collectables – mostly NASCAR and INDY car related items, die cast race car replicas from NASCAR and Indy, match box cars, Hummels, sterling silver spoons, Alice in Wonderland set, sterling silver candle holders, sterling silver tea service set, an electric sound board, Bunnykins 1936 Royal Doylton set, Dale Earnhardt autographed photo, Todd Bodine autographed plaque with matchbox car and card, and a Dale Earnhardt matted photo with championship stats.
