View Article  Hooters Controversy: My Comments on 1/8/2007

The late National Review senior editor Frank Meyer wrote …

“truth withers when freedom dies, however righteous the authority that kills it; and free individualism uninformed by moral value rots at its core and soon brings about conditions that pave the way for surrender to tyranny.”

The comments below summarize the points I made at Monday night's City Council meeting…

The “Hooters” controversy is one of the most difficult issues I’ve dealt with since being elected six years ago.  It has required a conscientious effort to balance the sometimes conflicting values of freedom and morality. There's no doubt in my mind that many Troy citizens have strong and passionate beliefs on one side or the other of this controversy.

As an elected official of the City, I’m generally cautious about expanding the power of government because it has a monopoly on the use of force. There are times when it’s entirely appropriate to use the power of government to protect moral values. But, I believe that we should always carefully consider the potential costs and their impact on liberty.

As I said Monday night, I’ve never been into Hooters and will never go into one. I believe that locating a Hooters at the corner of Big Beaver Road and Rochester Road does not present the best image for Troy. To be entirely fair, I don’t believe that retailers like Victoria’s Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch present the best image for our City either.

As we deliberate over the appropriate course to take, it’s vital that we take into account the plight of the residents who live next to the existing Hooters on John R.  No neighborhood in Troy should believe that their City government is willing to use them as a dumping ground for less than desirable businesses.

View Article  Incredible Kid Nomination Form

Do you know an incredible kid between the ages of 5 and 12?  March is “Incredible Kid” Month.  This is an opportunity for adults to nominate a child that has qualities that make him or her special.  The child may have watered your plants while you were on vacation, shoveled snow off of your sidewalks, walked your dog, volunteered at your house of worship, or has an irresistible pleasant smile.

It is an important part of a healthy community to recognize all members of society.  “Incredible Kid” awards are another way of showing young people that the community cares about them and wants them to grow up healthy and drug free.

The Troy Community Coalition For the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, partners with Camp Fire USA and the community to recognize these incredible young individuals.  We will be recognizing nominees at a special Troy Community Coalition meeting on Thursday, March 1, 2007.  Spread the word about this event.  Take the time to let a child know just how incredible he or she is.

The Troy Community Coalition has invited Dr. Arthur Weaver back to present his highly successful “Breathe Free” seminars to help individuals quit smoking.  There is no charge for the series, however donations are encouraged.  This program is made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Troy.

Program begins February 19, 2007 / 7:30 p.m.

The program is scheduled for 7 days, February 15, February 19-23 and February 26, 2006 at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois.  Each class runs 90 minutes beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Space is limited.  Call now for early registration, 248-823-5088.

Successful Treatment

The Breathe Free Smoking Cessation program has been successful in helping more people discard their smoking habit than any other program.  It has been used nationally to help millions quit smoking.  Dr. Weaver has used this program in the Detroit metropolitan area since 1966 and has helped an estimated 100,000 people become smoke free.

The Breathe Free program is a group interaction, behavioral change seminar with an introductory session explaining the program and preparing the individuals for the withdrawal process.  There are five successive sessions, and a graduation program the following week.

Participants are instructed how to handle the smoking urges and what to expect in withdrawal symptoms.  They also learn how to handle the much longer lasting psychological association that can engender return to the smoking habit.

Professional Experience

Dr. Arthur Weaver is emeritus professor of surgery, Wayne State University.  His professional career involved practicing and teaching cancer surgery to students and residents at the university.  In the Detroit area he is recognized as the leading anti-smoking crusader, where for more than 30 years he has conducted hundreds of smoking cessation programs.  Each year he conducts clinics for the cities of Livonia, Southfield, Warren, and several school districts.

If you would like to attend the program please call the Coalition office at 248-823-5088 or return the form below.
