Last night I attended the Avondale Youth Assistance Recognition Dinner at the Auburn Hills Community Center. Avondale Youth Assistance offers financial assistance and/or counseling to qualified families, to aid in the strengthening of youth and families by preventing or reducing delinquency, neglect and abuse.

Avondale Youth Assistance Board Chairman John Dalton thanked the City of Troy for its support and invited me to address those in attendance.

The quality of life in Troy and our neighboring communities depends upon the active involvement of volunteers like those who work with Avondale Youth Assistance. Thank you for all you do!

View Article  New Trash Pickup Routes to Begin Next Week

From the City of Troy Community Affairs Department...

Get ready for new and improved collection routing for refuse, recyclable and yard waste starting Monday, February 5.  The new routing will change the pickup date for most residents.  Letters informing residents of their new collection dates will be mailed the week of January 15.

The trucks will run Monday through Thursday, allowing for them to be on the City’s streets fewer days of the week.  Any problems or issues will now be resolved no later than Friday, eliminating the need for unsightly appliance, furniture or other refuse from sitting by the curb over the weekend.  The new routing plan also eliminates the necessity for trucks coming through neighborhoods on weekends.

“As the City entered into discussions for the new contract, it was recognized that there were efficiencies to be gained,” Troy Public Works Director Tim Richnak said.  “The new optimized travel paths and balanced workloads will ensure the high level of service Troy residents enjoy without increasing costs.”

For questions regarding refuse disposal, composting or recycling, call 248.524.3399 or 248.524.3392.

Here's a couple of excerpts from the article by Gina Damron:

One hour into the opening of the controversial Hooters in Troy today, there were at least 300 customers, a 15-minute wait for a table and not one vacant parking space in the lot. Located on Rochester Road, near Big Beaver, the new Hooters officially opened it’s doors to the public at 11 a.m...

... At Sunday’s VIP event, the ribbon was cut by Troy Mayor Louise Schilling, who has supported Hooters from the start.

Last night, Mayor Schilling and I attended a presentation by the Friends of the Troy Public Library. It was facilitated by Mary Kerwin, Eve Parsons, Maria Hunciag, and Tammy Duszynski.

It was a very informative session that focused on the need for improvements to the Troy Library. The presentation and tour of the facility drove that message home to me.

As the City Council and City staff begin the process of planning for the Library's future, we also need to ensure that the plans are both cost-efficient and innovative.

The next Troy Community Coalition meeting will take place on Thursday, February 1st at 7 p.m. at the Police/Fire Training Center/4850 John R (east side of John R, just south of Long Lake).

Last month community representatives met to discuss the results of the latest school data for alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.  The data indicated Troy continues to make positive progress.  After the data was reviewed, participants divided up into groups to specifically discuss strategies for the Coalition to work on in the near future in terms of prevention efforts.

This February’s meeting will discuss specific, useful and timely ideas in that regard for the upcoming year.  All community members, as well as representatives from the media are invited to take part in this important meeting.  For additional information, please contact the Troy Coalition at 248-823-5088.
