From the Troy PD...

The Community Services Section of the Troy Police Department will host its first Junior Police Academy at the Troy Fire and Police Training Center from August 7th through August 11th.  The Training Center is located on John R just south of Long Lake on the east side of the road.  This free program will be conducted in two sessions each day.  The first session will run from 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. each day for 9 and 10 year old boys and girls.  The afternoon session will run from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. for 11 – 14 year old boys and girls.  Interest in this excellent opportunity was significant, and we are pleased to report the academy is completely full.

The Junior Academy will simulate many aspects of an actual police academy and is aimed at providing attendees with both physical and classroom activities.  The program will include presentations on personal safety; stranger danger; drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse prevention; driving safety; laws the pertain specifically to youth and the consequences of violating them; ethical and responsible life decision making; as well as leadership training. There will be daily physical fitness training challenges, including an obstacle course similar to that required for police officer candidates in the State of Michigan.  Alliance Ambulance Service, the city’s EMS provider, will present a training segment on basic first aid from the American Red Cross, which will provide participants with a certificate upon successful completion of the program.  The academy experience will include a tour of the Police Department and District Court, as well as hands-on exposure to police vehicles and other equipment.  A firearms safety segment will emphasize prevention and safety in terms of firearms, and participants will be able to engage in a simulated Police Academy range experience using air-soft simulation guns. An Evidence Technician will provide attendees with an interactive simulated crime scene experience.  The final day will include a mock arrest, booking, and arraignment.  Judge Dennis Drury from Troy’s 52-4 District Court will host the arraignment portion of this exercise in his courtroom.  The day will end with a Pizza Party.

LaSalle Bank is co-sponsoring this project and providing daily snacks and an academy uniform, including shorts, T-shirt, and cap for each participant.  Members from the Troy Police Explorer Post are assisting with chaperoning and logistics.  Troy Police Officers including the K-9 Unit will be providing much of day-to-day teaching and practical experiences.

Members of the media are welcome to stop by for photo opportunities and interviews of presenters and students.  Please contact Lt. Scherlinck at (248) 524-3447 to make arrangements.

View Article  Debbie Schlussel: Hezbollah & Syria Back Local House Candidate

Conservative political commentator and blogger Debbie Schlussel featured a disturbing post about State House Candidate Marty Knollenberg.

According to Debbie's post...

Why are agents of Hezbollah and Syria and supporters of their occupation of Lebanon giving big dollars to a candidate for the Michigan Legislature? That's the question all voters in Michigan's 41st House District, in suburban Detroit, should be asking of Republican primary contender Marty Knollenberg.

I do not believe that Marty is a front man for Islamic terrorists. However, I do believe that he should return any contributions that he has received from individuals and/or groups affiliated with terrorists. As President Bush said in 2001, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

by Megan Pennefather

There's nothing like $350,000 to get a transit center rolling. That's the amount the Michigan Department of Transportation will contribute to the Birmingham Troy Regional Transit Center, the $2 million train and bus station planned for the three-acre chunk of land behind Midtown Square at Coolidge Highway and Maple Road.

As the transit center's first donation, MDOT's gift won't go without fanfare: Officials are planning a formal check presentation at 10 a.m. Monday morning (July 31) on the future site of the transit center, a joint project between the cities of Birmingham and Troy. "I have been working on this for a year and a half without any help from any other state representative," said state Rep. Shelley Taub, R-Birmingham.

Judge refuses restaurant's request to move liquor permit to a more prominent site.

Oralandar Brand-Williams / The Detroit News

July 28, 2006

TROY --The popular Hooters restaurant this week was dealt another legal setback in its efforts to transfer its liquor license as part of a proposed move to a more prominent section of the city. Oakland County Circuit Judge John McDonald has denied a request to transfer its liquor license from its John R location to Rochester Road and Big Beaver at the Wagon Wheel site…

… Council member Wade Fleming, who was one of four members voting against the license transfer, said he was pleased with Wednesday's ruling. "I think it was the right thing to do," said Fleming. "That kind of establishment is not conducive to the view that we want on that corner. It's a very valuable piece of property. (Hooters) just doesn't fit in with the type of businesses there." …

… Councilman Dave Lambert was cautiously optimistic about the impact of the decision. "We won so far in the legal arena," said Lambert. "They have two options left. They can appeal or they can pursue another course and sue the city for denying them their due process."

Council member Robin Beltramini believes Hooters deserves the opportunity to move. "I have actually been in a Hooters," she said. "It's a fun place to be. The food is good. Their service is good. You see more scantily clad folks at the family aquatics center (in Troy)."
