… The new plastics guidelines are a departure from the agency's long-standing practice of only accepting plastic containers such as "type 1" and "type 2" bottles and detergent or milk jugs. The authority was unable to find someone to purchase the other recyclable plastics. Since residents were unable to leave them at the curb, the items often ended up in the trash. But officials recently reached a deal with a company that will accept the miscellaneous plastics. "We've finally found someone who will take that material and pay us for it," said Jeff McKeen, SOCRRA's general manager. "This was a couple of years' effort." The change is expected to increase the amount of plastics recycled more than 10 percent, he said. "It doesn't even have to have the recyclable logo on it. Anything that's plastic, we'll take," he said. "You'd be surprised how much you can get out of a house." The agency expects to process 15,000 tons -- or 30 million pounds -- of recyclables this year, including paper, plastic, glass and cardboard. The move is part of the agency's efforts to make recycling easier for residents of its 12 participating communities. In addition to the plastics change, the agency now will allow residents to put all paper and fiber products in one paper or plastic bag for collection. In the past, residents couldn't put paper recyclables in plastic…

Hooters has filed a lawsuit against the City because of our decision to deny the liquor license transfer.

Bullard states:

"Oddly enough, men on the council weighed in against Hooters while Mayor Louise Schilling and others took a sensible approach, quoted as saying legal businesses like Hooters had a right to relocate in the city."

My comment: I guess I'm supposed to support transferring the liquor license to Hooters because I'm a man!

Bullard also says:

"Anyway, the 4-3 vote means council abandoned its proper role in favor of a PR stunt to accommodate a handful of whiney residents -- Hooters will win when the case moves out of council fantasy into the real world of adults. Why, Jimmy Kimmel even took his mother to Hooters for Mothers' Day."

My comment: Mr. Bullard wants all of us "whiney residents" to follow the moral guidance of Jimmy Kimmel. Well, there already is a Hooters in Troy, and Bullard and Kimmel are welcome to take their families to that one.

View Article  Free Press: Behr America to expand its headquarters in Troy

Detroit Free Press

June 28, 2006

Behr America is expanding its North American headquarters and technical center in Troy by more than 75% with the addition of a three-story, 69,000-square-foot office building. The $8.5-million facility will be the second major expansion of the Troy headquarters at 2700 Daley. Behr has been in Troy for four years, during which its payroll has grown from 100 employees to nearly 550.

The auto supplier acquired 2.3 acres adjacent to its headquarters to construct the new office that will house up to 270 employees now working in rented facilities. Behr's technical center is an advanced testing facility for vehicle heating and cooling. It includes a $15-million climatic wind tunnel that allows engineers to test vehicles under all weather conditions. The state-of-the-art facility is used by other suppliers and automakers as well.
