… The new plastics guidelines are a departure
from the agency's long-standing practice of only accepting plastic containers
such as "type 1" and "type 2" bottles and detergent or milk
jugs. The authority was unable to find someone to purchase the other recyclable
plastics. Since residents were unable to leave them at the curb, the items
often ended up in the trash. But officials recently reached a deal with a
company that will accept the miscellaneous plastics. "We've finally found
someone who will take that material and pay us for it," said Jeff McKeen,
SOCRRA's general manager. "This was a couple of years' effort." The
change is expected to increase the amount of plastics recycled more than 10
percent, he said. "It doesn't even have to have the recyclable logo on it.
Anything that's plastic, we'll take," he said. "You'd be surprised
how much you can get out of a house." The agency expects to process 15,000
tons -- or 30 million pounds -- of recyclables this year, including paper,
plastic, glass and cardboard. The move is part of the agency's efforts to make
recycling easier for residents of its 12 participating communities. In addition
to the plastics change, the agency now will allow residents to put all paper
and fiber products in one paper or plastic bag for collection. In the past,
residents couldn't put paper recyclables in plastic…
