That Michael Martone donated stuffed animals and toys to kids undergoing treatment at the Karmanos Cancer Institute is noteworthy, but lots of people make charitable donations. What makes it significant is that the 52-4 District Court judge did so while undergoing his own rounds of chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Martone could have focused in on his own world, concentrating solely on his own problems. Instead, he had the courage and determination to look around him in typical, Martone style. It is that style that has rightly earned him the title of 2006 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. The honor is conveyed each year by Leadership Troy, with a broad-based panel making the selection...
