View Article  Flight 93
I saw a moving television movie on the A&E Network tonight. It's called "Flight 93." It's "the stirring story of the brave passengers and crew aboard hijacked United Airlines' Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. After learning of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, these ordinary civilians chose to fight back against the terrorists. The courageous revolt ultimately led to the deadly crash in a Shanksville, Pennsylvania field, just 20 air minutes from Washington. The passengers' actions likely prevented the plane from being used as a guided missile to destroy the U.S. Capitol or the White House."

View Article  California City puts itself on immigration watch
Article in today's USA Today By William M. Welch...

"Costa Mesa, Calif. — Mayor Allan Mansoor says his city has a problem with violent criminals who are in this country illegally, and he wants them sent home. His solution is to make Costa Mesa the first city in the country to authorize its police officers to begin enforcing federal immigration laws by checking the immigration status of people suspected of serious crimes and gang activity."

View Article  Troy in the Free Press: Where Teen Drinking Led: Criminals? Or just having some fun?
I found this article by Bill Laitner in today's Detroit Free Press.

It's entitled "Where Teen Drinking Led: Criminals? Or just having some fun?"

"The judge had chastised nine students caught drinking at a Troy high school prom last spring. That would be the end of it, he figured. It was, until Judge Michael Martone stumbled across a Web site weeks after the students had been sentenced to probation. Leering back at him from his computer screen were some of the same students from Troy Athens High School, now in college."

Here’s an interesting quote from the article:

“Her parents have yanked her out of MSU -- out of its culture of drinking, her mother said.”

I have a niece and a nephew at Michigan State. I can confirm that there seems to be a culture of drinking at MSU. Yes, I attended MSU in the 70s. And yes, we did our share of drinking. However, it seems to be much worse today than it was 30 years ago.

View Article  Free Press Article: "Troy to hold national search for new city manager"
The Detroit Free Pree Press has an article today on the City Manager search process. It is written by Detroit Free Press reporter Cecilia Oleck.

Cecilia asked me a few questions and here are my responses:

"Considering the reputation of the city and the people that live and work in our town, we felt a national search would be in our best interest," said Councilman Dave Lambert.

Lambert said the council would likely name an interim city manager, as the search process is expected to take three to four months.

Szerlag has recommended that John Lamerato, the assistant city manager for finance, be named interim manager. The council will likely decide early next month, Lambert said.

As the council begins the search for a new city manager, Lambert said he feels "a mixture of excitement and concern that we get the right person. You want to make sure that it's someone who will be there for a while."

Council members will tell the search firm what they would like to see in a new city manager.

For Lambert, that means someone who is a good communicator.

"It has to be somebody who can work well with building a good team on City Council, and someone who is comfortable working with the public and the media," Lambert said.
