Physical Evidence Key In Zoup’s Armed Robbery Arrest

On December 18th an armed robbery was committed at the Zoup’s restaurant, as outlined below:

Zoup, 2873 W. Maple, 12/18, 1808 hrs.
Complainant reported a male, possibly in his mid to late 20’s, 5-8, 145, wearing a black jacket, white shirt, dark colored cargo pants, white shoes, dark colored gloves, and a dark ski-mask robbed the restaurant using a silver semi-automatic handgun. The restaurant was closed at the time. One of the employees had opened the rear door to dispose of trash. Another employee was standing by the rear door to let that employee back in. When the employee arrived at the rear door, the employee knocked to gain re-entry. The employee standing by inside opened the door. At that point the suspect approached and ordered both back inside the restaurant at gunpoint. He ordered a third employee that was inside to lie on the floor. He obtained an undisclosed amount of money from the cash drawer located on the safe. 05-44594

On the night of the incident, a Troy Police K-9 Team conducted a track of the suspect which ended in a parking lot behind a neighboring business near some tire tracks in the snow suggesting the get away vehicle was parked there. Tire and shoe impressions left in the snow were preserved/photographed by Evidence Technicians. Investigators noted the tire impressions appeared unique and took the photos to a tire distributor who advised they appeared similar to Michelin brand tires specifically designed for Land Rover type SUV’s. Investigators also became aware that an ex-shift manager from Zoup had a 17-year-old girlfriend from Rochester Hills that drove such a vehicle. Investigators located her in her Land Rover on 12-21-05, stopped and arrested her on an outstanding arrest warrant from another jurisdiction. The tire treads on her SUV matched those found in the snow on the night of the incident. During the course of her arrest, it was discovered that she had driven her boyfriend in her vehicle to the parking lot in question on the night of the robbery. Investigators were able to obtain a search warrant on 12-22-05 for her 27-year-old boyfriend’s house in Troy. During the execution of that warrant, investigators recovered a black and silver semi-auto toy plastic handgun, a black winter jacket, and a pair of white shoes with a similar pattern on the soles as the prints recovered in the snow at the scene. Investigators proceeded to a sub shop in Detroit where the suspect was working and took him into custody. A small baggie of marijuana was recovered hidden in his sock when he was processed into the jail. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office filed a complaint and information for warrant charging him with one count of Armed Robbery, two counts of Assault with Intent to Rob Being Armed, and Possession of Marijuana. The warrant was sworn to and authorized before Judge Martone in 52-4 District Court in Troy. Manual Pauls, 27 years from Troy, was arraigned on those charges before Magistrate Waldman in 52-4 District Court in Troy on 12-23-05. He was given a $100,000.00 cash bond/no 10%. His exam is scheduled for 1-3-06 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Martone in 52-4 District Court in Troy.
