I was recently asked by a neighbor why there was no cross country skiing at Sylvan Glen Golf Course this winter.

Here is the answer...

Changes will be taking place at the Sylvan Glen Golf Course. The City of Troy is in the process of improving the stream that flows through the golf course to control streambank erosion and to enhance the ecology of the course, making it more natural and environmentally sustainable.

In addition to restoring the eroding streambank, the golf course overhaul will include the creation of several natural wetland areas adjacent to the stream, construction of six flow control structures and new golf cart bridge foundations, and the removal of Ash and other trees that are dead or in poor health. More than 250 diverse native trees and shrubs will replace the ones being removed. The wetlands areas will be planted with a variety of wetland plant plugs, sedges, grasses, and seed mixes. Replanting will enhance the visual character of the course, improving aesthetics and providing a wetland habitat.

All earthwork will be complete and heavy equipment will be removed by mid-April 2006, pending weather conditions. The finishing touches—including seeding, plantings, clean-up and surface restoration—is scheduled to be complete in mid-May 2006. As with any construction project in Michigan, alterations to the schedule may be expected, based on weather.

Questions about the project may be directed to the City of Troy Engineering Department at 248.524.3381.
