Today the Troy Community Coalition publicly lauded the Urban Outfitters outlet at the Somerset Collection in Troy for reacting positively to community concerns.

Last month a group of Troy parents filed complaints with the Troy Police Department concerning the recently opened outlet. They were upset over the fact that the Philadelphia-based retailer was marketing books and items that promoted marijuana use and sexual promiscuity to their teens. When police and prosecutors determined that the offensive items constituted protected free speech, parents turned to the Troy Community Coalition, an influential youth drug and alcohol prevention organization in the city.

Coalition Executive Director Ann Comiskey rallied her organization, comprised of parents, school officials, business leaders, as well as civic and religious groups to put public pressure on the retailer. In response, Urban Outfitters removed the pro-marijuana and sexually explicit items from its shelves.
Comiskey stated:

“We are very appreciative that Urban Outfitters chose to conform to the established standards of this community. This was a great example of the positive influence a community can have when we work together.”

Now, if we can just get "Victoria's Secrets" to remove some of the offensive displays in their window at Oakland Mall!
