Every year the Troy Police Department and Troy VFW Post combine efforts and co-sponsor a Holiday Food/Gift Drive. We receive the names of individuals and families that reside in Troy who are in need of assistance from Troy People Concerned (248-589-9199). This assistance includes food as well as gifts. Persons in need include single individuals, senior citizens, couples, single parent families, or entire families. The Troy Police Department and VFW Post assemble the food and gift packages. The packages are delivered on Thursday, December 15. This has become a holiday tradition for more than 10 years. Mr. Charlie Solis started the Food/Gift Drive. He is both a VFW Post member, and Troy resident.
Non-perishable food can be dropped off either at the Troy Police Department anytime, seven days a week, or at the Troy VFW Post during business hours. Money donations are accepted in the form of checks. Checks should be made out to the Troy VFW Post, not the Police Department. Checks can be dropped off at the Police Department or the VFW Post. In conjunction with the Food/Gift Drive, students from Niles Community High School in Troy will be “Caroling for Cans” in the Sylvan Glen Subdivision for the eleventh straight year! It will be held on Wednesday, November 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Residents are asked to donate non-perishable food goods to the carolers as they spread holiday cheer through the neighborhood. Residents who are not planning to be home can simply leave donations on their porch and they will be picked up. Troy Community Services Police Officers as well as school officials will be assisting the students. If anyone is aware of someone in need, alone, or struggling during the upcoming holiday season, please contact the Troy Police Department and we will attempt to include them in this effort. We especially want to reach out to seniors to insure they are not alone at Christmas. Businesses and families seeking to do something special for the holidays may sponsor a person or family from the list. We provide sponsors with the number of individuals, ages, gender, and in some cases a wish list, to assist in purchasing gifts and food for sponsored. Anyone interested in sponsorships, should contact us. The Police Department and VFW Post oversee the deliveries to the families. We keep those we assist in complete confidence. The contact person at the Troy Police Department is Officer Andy Breidenich at (248) 524-3464. The contact person at the VFW Post is Mr. Charlie Solis at 248-689-7289. The VFW Post is located on the north side of East Maple, between John R and Dequindre. The address is 2375 East Maple. The contact person for “Caroling for Cans” is Debbie McDonald at 248-823-5100 x5156. |
